Using a variety of materials, operations on Worm Shafts in Mercury's product range include:
- Rolling of worm spline
- Machining to desired profile
- Secondary operations such as; drilling, reaming, tapping, milling, keyway and slots, etc.
- Hexagons, squares, or rolled splines at ends of the worm shaft
- Heat-treatment
- Grinding OD journals to size and surface finish
- Shot-Peening of OD, for greater fatigue life
